This article will walk you through how to resolve the following error messages in Microsoft Access or Excel:
"The active content in this file is blocked. Review your Trust Center settings or contact your IT Administrator."
"SECURITY RISK: Microsoft has blocked macros from running because the source of this file is untrusted."
Map the Drive
- Open the Start menu
- Open "File Explorer"
- Scroll down on the left side until you see This PC
- Right-click on This PC and choose "Map Network Drive..."
- Select an unused drive letter from the drop-down menu in the "Drive:" area
- In the "Folder:" area, enter in the drive path - choose from below depending on where your file is located:
If the file giving you the error message is: Copy and paste this into the "Folder" box: Acuity MS Access database

- Make sure "Reconnect at logon" is checked and "Connect using different credentials" is unchecked
- Click "Finish"
Add File Location to Trusted Locations
- Open Excel or Access (Excel if it's the DM report/Excel file giving the error messages; MS Access if it's a database such as Acuity, Membership, etc giving the error message)
- Go to File > Options (Options is on the far left, very bottom)
- In the pop-up, click Trust Center (far left side of the window, bottom of the list)
- Click "Trust Center Settings" at the bottom near middle/right
- Click Trusted Locations on the left, 2nd from top
- Check box for "Allow Trusted Locations on my network (not recommended)" near bottom/middle. DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!
- Click "Add new location" button near bottom/middle
- Click the browse button and browse to the folder your document is in and select that folder
- Click OK to leave the window.
NOTE: If you get an error message saying "The remote or network path you have entered is not allowed..." -click OK on the error message and click Cancel to pop up then go back to Step 6 (must check box for this to work correctly) - Click OK again to leave Trusted Locations window
- Click OK to leave Options window
